Introduction to Nose Work – “Follow The Nose”

New Session Starting Monday, August 21, 2017 at 6:00/6:30 PM

Discover the wonders of your canine’s scenting abilities through the sport of Nose Work. Only one dog will be working in the ring at a time. Excellent for dogs with physical limitations, for shy dogs lacking confidence, dog-reactive dogs, and owners who want to marvel at the ability of their dog to locate scents. Useful for people who lose things! You will learn how to teach your dog to locate keys, cell phones, etc. Class will teach the search command and introduce the first odor used in Nose Work trials. Handlers will learn to read and understand their dog’s body language while working scent.

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Training

For Pups 2-10 months

(This class may be split into Age-Appropriate Groups)

The AKC S.T.A.R.® Puppy Program will reward responsible owners who take the time to train and socialize their new puppies. The program is a natural precursor to the AKC Canine Good Citizen® Test. “S.T.A.R.” stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner, all of the things a puppy needs to have a good life.

The program is open to all dogs. Puppies can begin training as soon as they have the necessary vaccines and they can enroll in AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy at any point up until their first birthday. (Rabies vaccination is not required for pups that are under 6 months of age.)

This class will focus on socializing your puppy with other puppies, people and environments. We will cover leadership skills, grooming, proper manners and obedience. We will introduce name, collar and recall games using treats for rewards while shaping behaviors for the sit, watch, down, stay, stand, come when called and loose-leash walking. We’ll discuss puppy issues, the benefit of using a crate and teaching, “go to mat.”

At the end of the training course, the CGC Evaluator will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test. Upon passing, owners and their puppies will be enrolled in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program and will receive an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package which includes: a certificate for framing; AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy medal, AKC Puppy Handbook, discount enrollment in AKC Companion Animal Recovery and subscription to monthly e-mail newsletter that includes training tips.

AKC Canine Good Citizen/Basic Obedience

For Pups/Dogs over 6 months old

Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs. The AKC’s Canine Good Citizen program is recognized as the gold standard for dog behavior. In CGC, dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test can earn a certificate and/or the official AKC CGC title. Dogs with the CGC title have the suffix, “CGC” after their names.

This class will focus on the foundation work necessary for leadership, manners and obedience exercises: watch, sit, down, stay, stand, heel, figure eight, recall and loose-leash walking. Your dog will learn to properly greet a friendly stranger; sit politely for petting and grooming; walking through a crowd; reaction to another dog; supervised separation. As we progress through the course we will begin introducing distractions while increasing distance and duration for the sit and down stay. All work will be done on leash. Dogs that successfully complete this level are ready for the CGC (AKC Canine Good Citizen Test). Students will train for 6 weeks, and the Canine Good Citizen test will be offered the following week. Dog/handler teams who are not quite ready to test may repeat this class for $70.00.
